As the father of six daughters, I have had this conversation many times and continue to as the younger ones grow. What’s tragic today is seeing young girls under 16 wearing nothing but the shortest shorts and a long t-shirt giving the illusion of nothing there. And it’s worn in the church and youth groups. This trend needs to stop. Modesty is the greatest when accompanied by a heart of worship that displays of love of Jesus by the clothes one wears as a tribute to Him.

Thank you! I am dismayed at how many Christian parents allow their daughters to dress immodestly, not to mention the grown women who come into church wearing revealing clothing.

That’s exactly why I wrote the article.

I have talked till I am blue in the face I have used scripture and gave them the verse. Its worse to have a mill stone around your neck than to cause one of my little ones to stumble. So when fathers and mothers and single women allow and dress to bring attention to themselves especially in the Church. This is the verse I think of. I was delivered out of homosexuality and even women who have been regenerated might still struggle at times. So I have made the argument that your dressing provocative its not about you it's about honoring Christ and not making another person stumble. We have so many so called Christian women celebrities like Carrie Underwood who dresses so revealing. But Then everyone says don't judge the favorite verse.

We are leaving for a Christian camp in a week run by a large well-known church. We have high standards for our girls for modesty, but we struggle that not all of the Christian churches that attend uphold a dress code (and our own is not all that strict to start with).

I have five girls. I have always modeled modesty and required it. We attended two different churches in the past, and my own girls were isolated for our stance on modesty, often insulted because mom is too strict, when I don’t require long skirts/skirts only , just decency.

Honestly, my girls were never in public school, and it made it far easier to raise modest girls who don’t like immodesty.

Ugh, tell me about it. The women in the gym are the worst! Young girls looking like hookers, letting it all hang out. You can tell how insecure they really are…it’s quite sad.

Agreed. I see the trend toward immodesty as the increase of insecurity (it screens “Look at me, please!!!”)

There is an awesome book written years ago by Wendy Shalit, called simply “A RETURN TO MODESTY; DISCOVERING THE LOST VIRTUE”. Its a fabulous discussion of why women need to be aware of the effects of being modest. Im not even sure its still in print. I STRONGLY recommend it.

I have tried telling my neice who is in her 40's with jer husband sitting there about their dress it goes in Deaf ears. They got to a huge Mega Life Church. I am really having a hard time even spending time with them as we have such different Biblical views..

Being a teenage girl, I can tell you that things like this need to be said more often.

In order to figure out what was immoral and what was moral, I had to do my own research and come to my own conclusions.

Adults need to step up and learn how to explain things in ways that actually make sense instead of abandoning their daughters to either silence or illogical excuses. That would have made things so much easier - and perhaps I would have been spared from some things that I regret.
