As a high school teacher I am forever cheering on when admins take this seriously - dress codes and even uniforms go a long way in improving how we all see ourselves and project ourselves to others. It is spot on to say it stems from something deeper - we are searching for an identity, something to make us stand out no matter how unattractive or weird.
In a more targeted sense, I remember the days of referring to “your Sunday best.” Best because it reflected—even to the unredeemed—a respect for God and His house. It’s the respect that has our nostalgia longing for those days.
But to your greater point, we are bought with a price that was too high for us to pay so to honor Him who paid the price, dress to reflect the value of the cost!
I can't stand that people wear the football clothing of their favorite team to church on Sunday. Football is a religion in this country and I cannot stand that people mix their religions on Sunday morning. They come dressed in their favorite team's clothing and expect it to not affect their worship. I do not. Sunday morning is for God not for screaming to the world what football team I root for. I come to church to worship God. When I go home, I will change into my favorite team's clothing if I choose but I will not wear it to church.That time is for God not for my football team. And it drives me nuts that people don't see the difference and don't care.
It's a paradox to me that people usually dress up for a wedding or a funeral, but come to church in shorts and flip flops. We tell people to come as you are, and I understand that a clean pair of jeans and a t-shirt might be the best some people can do, but I'm so tired of immodest clothes worn by the children of Christian parents, or worse yet, by the parents themselves.
My experience is that people take a lot of clothing OFF for a wedding. It is so hard to go to “Christian” weddings anymore b/c of the immodesty. On a day when the bride should celebrate the exclusiveness of her relationahip w/ her husband, she bares her shoulders, accentuates her cleavage, emphasizes a mermaid silhouette around her hips, or worse. The “Christian” wedding is more about show than substance. So very sad.
In my experience, this lack of modesty for the wedding seems to apply to both those who have “saved” themselves for their husband & those who haven’t. Just go to church on a Sunday morning to observe how unimportant modesty has become in the church. Like the area of entertainment, fhe church looks like the world more than it looks like Christ in the area of dress. Sunday morning church, Christian weddings, & other gatherings of Christians should be a place of safety for the men (& women) in the church—in every way.
And if there are new or less sanctified believers at a gathering of Christians, they will be encouraged “without a word” to be more Christ-like in the area of modesty.
I’ve never seen such an ugly generation; fat, ugly, blue/pink hair, tattooed & thick. All in black leggings & tiny tops with oodles of stomach out with a ring in their bellies & noses.
Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy. The whole 'unisex' apparel was brought in to destroy boundaries between male and female and so make it easier for the eventual push into gender confusion. Even as a teen in the 80's it just felt wrong to me, but everyone was like "chill dude". Unisex was prophesying the future of the west for those with eyes to see it. The slippery slope IS A THING and this one eventually led to the destruction of human bodies and therefore fertility (which the devil hates as it reminds him he can never be like God as only God creates life).
Now I see younger members in my huge extended family throwing onesie parties. People will even wear onesies in public. Talk about infantilization of our culture! I can see there is a funny side of it, but it's not worth the laughs. You train others to treat you by how you respect yourself, and then these young adults wonder why they aren't respected.

Yes. There are whole generations who have no idea how to dress--for self-respect or respect of others.
