The Smoke Is a Lie: How Weed Is Discipling a Generation
By Virgil Walker | Sola Veritas
I walked into a gas station.
The kind with flickering lights, lotto tickets behind bulletproof glass, and the smell of weed baked into the walls. But no one's rolling joints anymore.
It’s sleek now. Vapes in shirt pockets. Gummies in backpacks. Edibles that look like candy. Weed’s gone digital. And it’s everywhere.
Our sons don’t smell like smoke.
They smell like cherry-flavored surrender.
This isn’t just about marijuana.
It’s about a generation discipled by escape.
A culture high on delusion.
A Church too silent to say what needs to be said.
Weed Isn’t a Medicine. It’s a Master.
We were told marijuana would heal.
That it would help with anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, depression.
But what they didn’t tell us is this:
Weed doesn’t heal trauma. It just mutes the symptoms long enough for your soul to rot in silence.
This generation doesn’t need sedation.
It needs salvation.
It doesn’t need another hit.
It needs to be set free.
Weed offers relief without repentance.
It offers comfort without confession.
It pretends to be peace, but it’s just a pacifier.
Masculinity Is the First Casualty
You can’t lead your family if you can’t lead yourself.
You can’t protect a nation if you can’t stay sober.
You can’t build a legacy when your mind is lost in a cloud.
This is why weed culture is so attractive to weak men:
It asks for nothing.
It demands no discipline.
It numbs the conscience.
And it kills the warrior inside.
Godly masculinity requires sobriety, not sedation.
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
—1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)
If you're high, you're not watching.
If you're numb, you're not fighting.
And if you're passive, you’re already conquered.
Weed Culture Is Worship Culture
Make no mistake—this is religious.
Weed has prophets (rappers and influencers).
It has evangelists (dispensaries on every corner).
It has sacred rituals (wake and bake, chill and cope).
And it has a false gospel:
“Take this. You’ll feel better.”
But it never delivers.
Because the problem isn’t pain.
The problem is sin.
And the cure isn’t in your pocket—it’s on the cross.
Why the Church Must Speak Now
The Church didn’t wait 30 years to speak up about porn.
But it’s been largely silent about weed—either because we don’t understand it or we’re too afraid to sound “legalistic.”
Enough of that.
We don’t need to shame people.
But we must not shrink back from the truth.
“Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit…”
—Ephesians 5:18 (ESV)
Substitute wine for weed.
The principle remains: Get sober. Stay filled. Live holy.
To the Men Reading This
If you’re stuck in the cycle—numbing, escaping, hiding—I’m not condemning you.
But I am calling you out.
You weren’t made to float through life half-alive.
You were made to build, lead, protect, and glorify God.
It starts with clarity.
It continues with courage.
And it requires repentance.
“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
The Battle Plan
Confess it – Stop pretending it’s not a problem. Call it what it is.
Cut it off – Vapes, gummies, oils—delete the access.
Get accountable – Tell your pastor. Your brother. Your dad. Your son.
Feed your soul – Replace your high with truth. Scripture is your fuel.
Start small, fight hard – This is war. Get your sword.
Final Word
You weren’t made for escape.
You were made for eternity.
Weed can’t give you peace.
But Jesus can.
The smoke is a lie.
Don’t inhale it.
Expose it.
And walk free.

It can also bring on schizophrenia.
Right on point as usual Pastor Virgil!
